"The military, prison, and financial policies of the U.S. government are interrelated, creating a social system that is repressive and offensive to human dignity for people who experience it, especially the marginalized, the poor, the 'Third World'. The poor in America are filling the prisons and the 'Third World' are the fodder on the other end of the bombs in America's wars. In categorizing the abuse of power that is undertaken by institutions operating 'above the law' or through State privilege, the deprival of life by government policies through war and the deprival of liberty to individuals through imprisonment are particularly fundamental problems that relate to the basic human rights every person should enjoy equally. Capitalism is being used as a justification for these actions historically by American policies, leadership, and their rhetoric... When you discuss what the alternatives to the 'corruption' that favors the 1% or represents only a fraction of the 1% who are permitted an active or consequential role in politics, it seems that #ows is suggesting an alternative of direct, active, particpative democracy that is also interested in a reform of policy according to moral standards." + Understanding #ows - Noam Chomsky Interview

The Search for the Electric Dipole Moment (EDM) - Submitted by: Raymond Schach

The search for the Electric Dipole Moment (EDM) in sub-atomic physics represents the latest research in science to go beyond the Standard Model. The Electric Dipole Moment (EDM) exists within the Standard Model as a narrow range of predicted values calculated based upon the Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) mechanism. Founded on groundbreaking work in the 1950’s by T. D. Lee and C. N. Yang on symmetry and parity relations in sub-atomic particles, measurement of the EDM involves inherent CP symmetry violations and higher-level conservations in a manner similar to quark mixing, as posited by current consensus. Historically, this view is related to anti-matter physics, as Gerry Bauer of CERN writes:

‎"According to the World Bank, the 2.3 billion residents of low-income countries accounted for less than 3% of public and private consumption in 2004, while the 1 billion residents of high-income countries consumed more than 80% of the global total. In this same year the United States accounted for 4.6 percent of the world's population and 33 percent of global consumption--more than $9 trillion U.S. dollars."

‎"The United Nations Millennium Declaration, signed in September 2000 commits world leaders to combat poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation, and discrimination against women."

Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education
Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women
Goal 4: Reduce child mortality
Goal 5: Improve maternal health
Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability
Goal 8: Develop a Global Partnership for Development

"The World Bank estimates an additional foreign aid of $40-$60 billion a year is required to reach the Millennium Development Goals by 2015."

‎‎"The human race is living beyond its means. A report backed by 1,360 scientists from 95 countries - some of them world leaders in their fields - today warns that the almost two-thirds of the natural machinery that supports life on Earth is being degraded by human pressure. The study contains what its authors call 'a stark warning' for the entire world. The wetlands, forests, savannahs, estuaries, coastal fisheries and other habitats that recycle air, water and nutrients for all living creatures are being irretrievably damaged. In effect, one species is now a hazard to the other 10 million or so on the planet, and to itself."

Sandel claims that enhancements 'corrupt the telos' - Submitted by: Walt Sonnabend

In “The Case Against Perfection,” Michael Sandel writes a treatise against genetic engineering with his main points of argumentation based in the ancient Greek philosophical concept of “telos” or the meaningful, gifted nature of life with a purpose and design. Sandel claims that genetic and other pharmaceutical types of biological enhancements to human efficiency of operation corrupt the telos or fundamental meaning and goal of the system they are deployed into in order to improve, both personally for the individual and for society as a whole. Enhancements are furthermore self-defeating to the human appreciation of natural abilities and the cultivation of talents in his view.

Genetics in Public Utility - The way patients reference genetic texting information - Submitted by: Meredith Jones-W...

The three texts under evaluation relate to the public policy and popular opinion surrounding genetics in the public and scientific community. The Cassini et al. (2011) study showed that patients both value and personally reference genetic information on an archival basis from their physicians related to genetic testing, and that they overwhelmingly found the written documentary information valuable. (Cassini et al., 2011) The Condit et al. (1998) study showed that the clinical data was leading the popular interpretation of genetic data in mass-media without the...

Evidence Based Practice - Nursing, EBP, & NMC Professional Conduct - Submitted by: Meredith Jones-W...

Evidence Based Practice (EPB) in nursing is founded on the principle that the the quality of healthcare in institutions, patient service in hospitals & clinics, and emergency preparedness of nursing staff are all increased when the individuals providing the healthcare services are well informed with the latest medical research. (Parahoo, 1997)  EBP is also a key factor in the NMC (2004) Code of Professional Conduct, which states that nursing professionals are personally accountable for their quality of caregiving, and must provide the highest quality of...

The Absence of Paradigm - Feyerabend : "All methodologies have their limits" - Submitted by: Thomas Evers

The distinction between positivist and constructivist epistemologies is an important consideration to include in the question of methodology relating to research, analysis, or investigation, especially the degree to which it is indicative or illustrative of subjective bias. One reason that epistemological concerns are ignored generally in scientific research is the focus is not on a broad aspect of theory related to systems of knowledge but rather a specialized focus testing or extending understanding of just one small aspect of a greater overall system. Another reason...

Scientific Exceptionalism - Knowledge Production: cumulative, convergent & progressive - Submitted by: Thomas Evers

Thomas Kuhn's theory of paradigm shifts in scientific knowledge can be applied to an understanding of business innovation and change. Groundbreaking products can radically redefine both markets and consumer expectations leading to a broader shift in fashions, styles, or designs. One important aspect that distinguishes Kuhn’s model of scientific knowledge and the exceptionalist model is that Kuhn does not see a linear, steady, or uniform rate of evolution in scientific progress but one that changes in paradigm shifting moments related to technological...

Rare Planetary Alignment - Visible from Earth

http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,2070503,00.html -

"Beginning today and lasting for a few weeks, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and Mars will be visible in the early morning sky, aligned roughly along the ecliptic — or the path the sun travels throughout the day. Uranus and Neptune, much fainter but there all the same, should be visible through binoculars."
